Do drugs make a difference to the natural history of IBD, and do they affect the outcome of surgery?
Gerhard Rogler observed that current therapies did alter natural disease history of IBD affecting factors such as mucosal healing, lower rates of surgery and hospitalization, and clinical remission. Further 5-ASA, thiopurines and anti-TNFs reduce the risk for colorectal cancer in UC and CD patients. However, IBD medications, especially steroids, anti-TNFs and thiopurines also increase postoperative complications in IBD.
